To address the importance for freedom, he said the government needs to revert back to its original principles and lessen government power.
“The real principles of freedom in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution have definitely changed,” said Maswell, who has a Ph.D. “We have three branches of government, but they’re not three equal branches.”
The expansion of the government, law-passing power of justices and increased spending and taxation are issues that have ignited symbolic tea parties to remind people of their liberties, Maswell said.
“There are actually two first flags, the Grand Union flag and the Liberty flag,” said Maswell, holding the first Liberty flag with 13 stripes to represent the colonies. “There were also those people who wanted unity and representation.”
He said the Declaration was about much more than representation when it was written. Addressing the abuse of powers and taxation, he said the government is straying from what the Declaration originally stood for.
