The steps of the Lincoln Memorial will once again be the host of a meaningful gathering on Saturday, Aug. 28, 47 years to the day since Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
The event is intended to “pay tribute to America’s service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor,” stated Beck’s website. Americans are being asked to “come join us in our pledge to restore honor.”
The original purpose of the rally was for Beck to introduce his “100 year plan” for America; a plan with the purpose of restoring the United States back to its original roots and strengths. Now the event is focused on bringing Americans back to “the values that founded this great nation,” as well as honoring the military and their families, according to Beck’s website.
The rally is promoted in part by the Freedom Works and Tea Party Patriots and is sponsored by the National Rifle Association (NRA). Various Tea Parties across the nation have organized buses traveling to Washington, D.C., in order to bring people to the rally. Members of Freedom Works, as well as the NRA, while promoting the Restoring Honor rally and spreading the word among their supporters, assure that their organization’s and political beliefs are separate.
Despite Tea Party involvement, Beck has repeatedly stated this is not a Tea Party rally, nor is it a political event. Beck has discouraged attendees from bringing signs and other political paraphernalia that might detract from the significance of the rally. Beck stated on his website that “there are plenty of opportunities to talk about politics. This isn’t one of them.”
All funds raised by the rally are reported to be donated to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), a low-cost organization whose supporters, according to its website, “provide support and assistance to the U. S. military’s special operations community.” Specifically, the SOWF donates educational scholarships and grants to children of special operations military who have been killed.
Beck’s website states in the fine print that funds will only be donated to SOWF once the cost of the rally, an estimated $1 million, has been paid in full.
Speakers of the rally include Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Dr. Alveda King, Marcus Luttrell and members of SOWF. The rally will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 1p.m.
